Honoring Your Needs

In a world where options are presented by the plenty and convenience is at the tip of our fingers, we find ourselves utterly confused. Our Pinterest boards are a collection of what we wish to align with through tapping into the experience that has been had by another. There’s no doubt about it, in the modern world we live vicariously through others. We want to see where we fit in to that moment or expression. Do we share a similar astrological placement with that person? Are we of the same background? Do our tastes align similarly? Does our temperament match up? An infinite collection of connections to the world around us.

What a lot of us find ourselves struggling with are our habits. We want to align to said lifestyle or thing, and a lot of the times we know what we need to do to get there—but something is blocking us. No matter how many times we try, eventually, we tire and there is an excuse or circumstance that is blocking us. Then, this leads to frustration and negative feelings within the self. The more you disappoint yourself, consciously or not, the more you begin to doubt your ability. You will notice more and more, as time goes on, that you will hesitate with things you used to jump right in to. As we get older, and our responsibilities grow, our passions can wane. Restricted by the reality we live in but having the freedom to make choices, we make excuses because we can. We are not under the parental force that is requiring certain behaviors and actions. We can give up and start whenever we want. We fuel ourselves from within for whatever. Which is why romance and dating are always the top desires in the human heart. Having a fulfilling and secure relationship can allow for energy to be distributed back and forth between both parties at different times. Partnership can allow for people to hold each other accountable.

I digress, this article is not about relationships. It is a deeper dive into the “Why” surrounding those habits we have. Currently, we are more individualistic than ever. We are all about “protecting our peace” and putting our power towards certain achievements. Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2020. Pluto is the collective willpower—a transformative force. Capricorn is the sign of legacy, career, and ultimate height. We are willing to expose ourselves, be influencers, put our life in the public, or climb a ladder towards a goal that almost guarantees success. Remember, there are only a few things in life that are guaranteed.

If we are making these bold climbs, we want to make sure that we are offering a consistent effort to the goal or goals. Burning yourself out, going full force every day, is not going to get you there – rather, it’ll bring those feelings of disappointment and then the cycle of hesitation begins. What we must focus on is our basic needs. What in our life are we lacking and what are we using to substitute the lack? Is it a healthy substitution or an unhealthy one?

For me, I found myself not having human connection or social interaction in my life besides work. Of course, online-synthetic interactions are daily—but being around people and connecting with them? It was lacking for years. What did I do to substitute? I began drinking at bars. (Unhealthy) The unhealthy substitute is never as fulfilling as what you need. The healthy option was to seek groups in my area that were interested in the same things I was OR reconnect with family. (Healthy)

If you find multiple areas of your life where you are lacking, you will find multiple habits being made that lower your vibration and vitality. Thus, the veil of confusion locks on to you.

In Vedic Philosophy, there are three modes of energy or gunas: Tamas(Destroy/Inertia/Sleep), Rajas(Create/Passion/Active), Sattwic(Clearing/Peace/Rest). Everyday, we cycle through these gunas and certain activities will activate one guna more than the others. Tamasic foods or activities will cause us to destroy ourselves in some way. Indulging in sweets or food to feel the dopamine. Watching porn, scrolling all day long, etc. Sattwic foods or activities will have us in a meditative state in which we are receiving information and clearing our energy. Rajasic foods or activities will encourage us to act or create. Mercury and Venus, the two most social and relational planets, are embedded with the Rajasic energy. This is the energy we must follow in order to tap into the habits that can align us to our goals. We have to be creative, we have to analyze, think outside the box, read, get counsel – All these Mercurial and Venusian things.

Self discovery is about asking yourself questions. Ask yourself what is it you need. Security? Creativity? Connection? What is it? We all need different things. Find a healthy, or active way to achieve that which you lack. It can be as simple as keeping your room clean or as intricate as creating a new version of yourself. Honoring your needs in a healthy way ensures you don’t begin to spiral off track.
